In a groundbreaking move to integrate blockchain technology with spiritual journeys, Indian Railways has announced a partnership with Chaincode Consulting to issue NFT-based tickets for passengers traveling to Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for the upcoming MahaKumbh Mela. This partnership, unveiled on January 13, marks a historic step towards digitizing one of the world’s largest and most sacred religious gatherings.
The MahaKumbh Mela, a significant Hindu festival and pilgrimage, takes place every 12 years and attracts millions of devotees from across the globe. Over 450 million people are expected to travel to Prayagraj for the 2025 event, making it the largest congregation of people on Earth. In response to this monumental scale, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is introducing Non-Fungible Token (NFT)-based tickets to streamline the travel experience and enhance the spiritual journey.

The NFTs will be powered by the Polygon blockchain, chosen for its high throughput, low transaction fees, and environmental sustainability. The tokens will be issued via the Real-World Assets (RWAs) and traceability platform, NFTtrace, ensuring that each ticket is verifiable on the blockchain. This initiative will not only secure ticket records but also provide participants with a digital memento of their pilgrimage.
IRCTC is a key player in India’s rail travel sector, with around 1.2 million train tickets booked daily on its website. The introduction of NFT tickets is set to offer global participants a new way to engage with the MahaKumbh experience while exploring the potential of Web3 technology. Enthusiasts and influencers in the crypto community have already celebrated this step, recognizing its significance in advancing crypto and NFT adoption in India.
In addition to the innovation in ticketing, the blockchain records will be maintained on Hyperledger, and smart contracts will be used to manage traceability, ensuring a transparent and efficient system. This move highlights India’s growing interest in exploring the practical applications of blockchain beyond the crypto markets.
Prominent global figures, including actor Richard Gere, movie director David Lynch, and Tibetan Buddhist leader Dalai Lama, are expected to attend the 2025 MahaKumbh pilgrimage, further cementing the event’s global significance.
The issuance of NFTs for MahaKumbh Mela is a symbolic convergence of tradition and technology, offering a unique, modern twist to an ancient spiritual journey. For millions of devotees, this initiative will not only serve as a spiritual experience but also as a step forward in understanding the practical uses of Web3 and blockchain technologies in the real world.
This innovative project, in collaboration with IRCTC, Polygon, Chaincode Consulting, and NFTtrace, is expected to inspire further adoption of blockchain technology in India, encouraging the seamless integration of technology with everyday life.
